Whether you're submitting your book baby to an agent, a publisher, or getting ready to self-publish, a copy edit is a critical step in making sure your manuscript is polished and submission ready. Copy editing focuses on ensuring that a manuscript’s grammar, punctuation, and spelling are correct, and that the story's pacing and development are on point.
Copy editing is a careful and thorough process that ensures your story shines and isn't held back by technical errors. Our approach to copy editing includes the use of several industry-leading copyediting softwares, as well as multiple passes by experienced editors who actually read yourbook, giving it the double whammy of success.
Copy editing at Squid & Ink takes a two-pronged approach.
Industry Leading Software - With a combination of Autocrit and Grammarly Premium, we give software the first (and final) look to check for issues of language continuity, word overuse, and overall sentence cadence.
Substantive Eye-to-Page Editing - At Squid & Ink, we read every page that passes through our editorial desk. Manuscripts are printed and inspected by hand, as well as edited on the screen. A minimum of two editors will review your manuscript, ensuring that you're getting the most eyes on your story as possible to catch every minor editing detail.
Double Doc Delivery - Once finished, we send you a markup file so you can see our changes, along with a clean copy that's ready to go. If we have questions or comments, you'll see these annotated in the marked copy.
timelines and rates
A quick edit is not a thorough edit. Editing takes time, patience, and possibly research to be most valuable. We try to be as quick as possible, but will never sacrifice quality for quantity in our editorial timeline.
Our copy editing rate is $.006/word, and a general timeline is two weeks per edit.
Deposit We require a 50% deposit to reserve your edit, which also covers your first round of editing. This retainer is fully refundable if you cancel or reschedule 61+ days before your edit date; 50% 31-60 days before; and non-refundable if 30 days or less. This books your time on our schedule, and gives us peace of mind. Full Payment: The full payment for your edit is requested once we've finished the editing process. Once paid, we'll provide your edit to you, along with a 3-day grace period to address any questions, comments, or otherwise be here for your thoughts once you've reviewed our work.
